One 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly blamed of taking the cremated remains of a dead baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.

Tragic Discovery

The young boy's parents discovered his remains in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.

Untrue Accusations Begin

The investigation heard how his mother got a communication on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The message stated: "Inform him thanks for breaking into my apartment."

In a testimony read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the media, claiming her baby's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a allegation which was false.

Law Enforcement Inquiry

An investigation report from authorities later determined the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the property was not stolen in the beginning".

News coverage about the supposed stolen ashes generated social media responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".

The "social media content were really distressing", she said.

Mental Health Impact

She explained that Kai had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions really mattered to him.

"This must have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was not true".

Kai was detained at home, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.

Police said they would be in touch, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the moment of his passing.

Withdrawal and Worry

His mother said Kai "became isolated" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like much longer".

When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her child told her he had entered the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom anytime he needed, but refuted removing anything.

Online Harassment

In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed online after the accusations.

The inquest learned that a young adult encouraged the teenager to kill himself.

She had no worries on the night before he died, describing how she had heard him "laughing and teasing".

She described him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is completely shattered".

He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".

School Reaction

The inquest received testimony from educational personnel at Connah's Quay High School.

On 8 November, she "heard some boys discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the first I learned".

"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.

After the conversation, the educator said she rang the family's parents' telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.

The court learned his family said they did not receive that communication.

Formal Conclusion

Lead investigator informed the inquest he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.

Delivering a descriptive finding, he said: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old child.

"Probably untruths were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the platform of online networks.

"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and after his questioning he was freed whilst inquiries proceeded."

The official concluded: "There is no evidence that the actions or failures of any organization caused or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to discern his purpose."
